neubauten.org
(meant for [Unknown site tag], but left here for other EN fans on my friends list)
I recently paid for a membership at neubauten's new site. In my case, I couldn't swing it as part of regular expenses, but my husband's birthday is approaching so I bought it as a gift for him. If you can possibly afford this, please join!
My cousin-in-law,
blixa23, has been raving about this.
We don't have broadband out here in the boonies, but I'm sure we'll enjoy it, too. :)
Go! Support EN! It's a great cause!
(are you happy, Al?)

Nice thing is, it's just a one-time fee, not a monthly subscription thing...and you get the CD, access to their streamed media, an e-mail account that's accessible via web or POP3, and all sorts of other neat things...
And even though you don't have broadband, they've further compressed the video stream (because their poor server kept dying the first day) so it should run alright. Plus, they've archived yesterday's and today's live broadcasts, so you can check it out. Do check out the 2nd feed from today (2002/08/25) and forward to about 1hr28min into the stream. Blixa was trying to win an eBay auction for a video game system for his niece. He apparantly got bid snipered, and you can see and hear him get pissed about it. Very amusing. :)
Back to the bandwidth thing...you're not going to be the only one on 56k connections. A lot of the members are on dialup as well. Hell, Blixa said that in the studio, they only had the one DSL line in for all of them...he said that they are poor. :)
neubauten.org has been taking more of my time online, listening and watching the streamed media and reading the message boards... This is probably the thing that will kick my LiveJournal addiction once and for all. ;)

you forget--we live in the boonies.
the *fastest* we have managed is 31.2
the typical for boy is 24.4 while he's on his work puter. i'm at 28.8 right now. the phone lines in the country suck. and we have to pay MORE for them because we live in the country.
i *am* going to switch ISPs, because i have a sinking suspicion ntelos has some faulty bits or incompatibilities (i can't dial in any faster even when i AM on new phone lines in the city). i KNOW my parents connected to earthlink at 44k when they were here.
