finally, a bike!
So, Ronan is short. He's wee and lean and hovers near the bottom of the growth charts. There are benefits. I don't have to buy him a new carseat to keep him rearfacing. He's still RF in the first convertible I bought him and will likely be able to RF in it until he's 4 or so. He wore the same clothes at the end of last winter as he wore at the beginning of this one. I don't have to buy summer clothes midway through the season unless I want to. He's very easy to wear on my back. And he's been in the same size of cloth diapers for over two years.
But he's still tiny for his age. I have to deal with folks asking if he's okay being so small and the ped occasionally mumbles under his breath. This is generally not a problem unless he's too small for something he really wants to do. And he's wanted a bike for at least a year. This past summer, he was convinced my mom would buy him a bike and when she told him she had a surprise in the garage, he ran over, exclaiming, "Oh! A bike!" It was a plasma car, which he found pretty darn amazing, but he kept talking about a bike for awhile.
I'd have bought him a bike last Christmas, but the shortest saddle height on a balance bike on the market is 11" and he just wasn't anywhere near there. Same problem at his birthday. And I was worried when his inseam was still barely 10" in September.
Then he just stopped talking about it. I think he gave up. I measured his inseam recently (he had a growth spurt in October) and he was finally growing up to 11" and beyond. We ordered one recently and kept the plain packing box in plain sight on the kitchen table. He took a rare nap this week, so I assembled it and then stored it in the car, under my cloak and some other blankets.
We open gifts on both the solstice eve and Christmas. We spread them out or do giftmas with family. Since we were totally snowed in last weekend, we held off on the bike. After he opened some other gifts yesterday, he went with Tom in for a change of dipe and clothes. I ran out to the car and brought his last gift in and hid it under a sheet. Tom told him he had another present.
The look on his face as he unveiled the bike was mostly disbelief.
He keeps coming up to us and telling us how much he likes his bike and saying thank you. He occasionally puts on his helmet and rides through the house. It's adorable.

How has Ronan done on the growth charts? I got the grumbles of "failure to thrive" from our first pedi because my kids are born huge and then their growth slows and plateaus rather quickly. Nate is still pretty small for his age, but he is healthy and happy...nevermind that the child is 10 and can still wear size 3T underpants.
I thought you were pretty small as a little kid too...maybe it is just some family trait? But then again I was always huge compared to you so you just looked munchkin-like to me as a young kid. ;)

But he's not seen his ped for a long time. We saw the NP for the allergy episode. I suppose I should probably call the ped or something. Waiting for flu season to be over (we already had the pigSARS, but hey, any excuse). I definitely need to get him into an allergist before I see the ped again.
I got a lot of flack when he didn't gain pounds between 10mo and 12mo. He started crawling at 10.5mo, so I wasn't concerned.
