Comcasssssstadelphia

So, the problem is not actually my host, as I figured out yesterday, but my ISP.

I can't reach 25-30% of the webpages I attempt to navigate to, including parts of the NWS, my gym's page, anything from typepad . . . and really oddly, I can't load videos or images from youtube or flickr, but I can load the text on those pages. I can't reach my mail, though I *can* check it via mail2web, which I really dislike.

[livejournal.com profile] nannar came over and used his work VPN to get past our ISP's issues. I think he's having similar issues at home. Some other friends are also having slowdowns and scattered problems with access.

So,yesterday, I attempted to use Comcast's online support. They funneled me to Adelphia's online support because they don't service my area yet (they just take my money). Surprise, surprise, Adelphia's powerlink page is one of the sites which refuse to resolve for me.

My brother . . . down in FL . . . attempted to fill in the info for me (I was chatting with him in iChat) and for some reason, the live chat wouldn't work. It probably doesn't like Macs.

So I called the customer service line from the Adelphia bill. It funnelled me to Comcast. After repeatedly entering my phone number and choosing my language what seemed like half a dozen times, I was told by that vapid automated voice, "we're sorry. We're too busy to handle your request. We hope you can call back later." No freakin' option to wait.

My calmer side said, "hey, maybe the wait time is over an hour and LOTS of people are having problems." "Maybe it'll all be fixed in the morning."

It's not all fixed in the morning.

When Adelphia had major outages, they always had an automated message first thing on the service line. I'm not terribly impressed with Comcast after the last 24 hours.

Our house has 3 computers hooked to one router.

Last night,
Computer 1 -- can access anything. No troubles.
Computer 2 -- did not try, but did not notice anything wrong in the pages she DID attempt to visit.
Computer 3 -- could access various fora, google (though not actually load gmail), youtube, quicktime, and nothing else on the 'net may as well have existed.

Happy Crapcast day. :P

What I think is going on is the Adelphuckedupia DNS server is partially hosed. If you don't know what DNS is, here's a couple of links, hopefully at least one will work.

http://www.howstuffworks.com/dns.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name_system

This is the IP address for liquidesign.ca - if you click on it you'll probably get a blank page with a broken image thingy in the center.

http://67.43.10.174/

If that works, then my theory is correct.

Your computer is configured to use whatever default your ISP is using, but you can change that. I don't have a Mac, so I don't know how, but maybe this will help.

http://www.askdavetaylor.com/find_the_dns_servers_on_your_mac.html

This is the DNS I'm currently on. It may work for you.

hsd1.co.comcast.net

Or maybe one form this list:

It doesn't load the IP at all for liquidesign. Same problem as with all the other sites: Failed to open page, Safari could not open the page “http://67.43.10.174/” because the server stopped responding.

Thanks for the public server list. I'll try another DNS. I didn't even think about manually choosing a server. Placenta brain.

Looks like someone beat me to the DNS explation. Same thing happened to me a couple times back when I was on Comcast. You might try www.opendns.com. In addition to providing a free public DNS service, they protect against mistyped urls, known phishing domains, etc. I have my router point to their servers now instead of Verizon's.

In case you can't reach the site, their dns servers are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. You'll need to 'sudo lookupd -flushcache' at the command line after making any dns change for it to take effect immediately.

Comcast is (or perhaps are...) replacing all the cable in the 'ville, and redoing the servers, and have been doing so for the last few months. They just did my street a week ago and when they were doing so, my intardweb was funky, but now I have no problems that aren't web-browser related--except for too-slow-for-what-I-am-paying-for download speeds. I'd give them another month to straighten things out, and then bitch to high heaven and switch to somebody else. There is somebody else, right?

I'm not sure they're in your area, but I loved speakeasy when I used them. Best service I've ever had with an ISP. The only times I ever went down was when they said I would, and all other times, the problem was fixed in one less than 10 minute phone call. A little expensive, but I can't recommend them enough.

Our options are Comcast, Ntelos wireless broadband, and Embarq DSL.

Ntelos wireless broadband is too slow (and we've done line of sight to the stupid towers). We've tried it.

DSL is too slow for the comparable fee scale, plus I'd had to run new phone lines under the house, which I really don't feel like doing (cave crickets. need I say more?).

Boy requires a VPN for work and does everything remotely. Cable is the best choice for us. We just have a craptastic provider.

I'm relatively certain speakeasy isn't here, but that's a site which isn't opening for me.

I would print this page and snail-mail it to their MD/CEO...
